A morning Coffee & More series (second Tuesday of each month) offers speakers, films and discussions on a variety of topics, preceded by a social time with refreshments. An evening LiveWires Presents series (fourth Tuesday of each month) presents authors and speakers to entertain and inform.

Dave Morine received a telephone call from his old friend Ramsay Peard asking him if he would be interested in canoeing the Connecticut River. The result of this trip is his memoir, Two Coots in a Canoe: an Unusual Story of Friendship. Spending a month on the river, relying on strangers for food and lodging,Morine chronicles their journey, the environment of the region and their relationship in this funny, thoughtful and tragic story. Join us to hear about this ‘coot’s’ trip of a lifetime. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing.

Health practitioner and consultant, Paula Koppel launches a three-part series on health and wellness as part of the Library’s LiveWires series. Part I begins with Understanding the Aging Process and Why Some People Live Longer. Part II continues on April 27 with Add Years to Your Life and Life to Your Years. The series concludes on May 25 with Myths and Misconceptions about Aging, or Why You Just Might Want to Live to Be 100. The speaker founded Paula Koppell & Partners, a consulting company known for developing innovative approaches to health care for middle-aged and older adults.

Almost everyone recognizes the value of color in setting the mood or feel of a space. What if you could fix the design problems in your home just by changing the color of spaces? By learning the language of color, it is possible to compensate for, or correct, problems in a space. Jonathan Poore, owner of Poore & Co., will discuss how color influences us and how homes and how we can transform interior space. Billed as Boston’s answer to Disneyland, Pleasure Island opened in wetlands off of Route 128 in 1959. Bob McLaughlin, co-founder of the Friends of Pleasure Island, has collected images, film, oral history and artifacts relating to the park, which he uses in his book. Read more…

Local author, David Kruh will present a slide show based on his book, Building Route 128, the story of the highway that began as a series of two-lane roads around Boston in the 1920s. Part of the Images of America series, David’s book and this slide show will appeal to those who are curious about the history of Boston suburbs and the changes that the highway has brought to this region.
