Do you think Special Needs Families are a little anxious about the word “storytime” (or “story times”)? I’m wondering if, even though in publicity it says the program is for Special Needs Families and therefore implies the librarian “gets it” if families are reluctant to come because they think a storytime means their children are expected to sit quietly and listen and knowing the children can’t do that, don’t come to storytime? I’m asking because for my upcoming special needs storytimes I’ve thrown out the word “storytime.” I’m trying to see if it makes a difference.

The Chelmsford Library will begin a 3-session gaming program on April 2 for autistic children ages 5-8 yrs old. Wii games, board games and card games will be offered from 8:00-9:00 am, before the library opens to the general public. Space is limited. You do not need to be a Chelmsford resident to register. I read this and agree; it’s well done and a wonderful book. I was happily surprised to see a “celebrity” autism book that I really like! I also agree it would be a nice intro to other families to understand what it’s like to be an ASD family. Thanks for sharing your review, Molly.
