Literacy starts at birth. Long before they learn to read or write, children are learning about language. Every exposure to seeing or hearing words is laying the groundwork for future skills. How can you help? Bring your child to the library!

Babytime Playgroup
Friday, February 10, 2012
9:30 – 10:30 am
This drop-in playgroup is for babies and toddlers ages birth to 24 months and their caregivers. Age-appropriate toys will be provided. This is a wonderful chance to socialize and make connections. Books, booklists, and other early literacy resources will be on display. The Playgroup will be held on the second and fourth Fridays of the month in the Library Meeting Room.

Mother Goose Lapsit
Join us for a storytime designed for infants and toddlers. Evening sessions are often available for working parents. Dates, Times, & Registration Information
Sing-A-Long
Music is a great way to introduce language to babies. Our performer, Peter Sheridan, always keeps the kids entertained and often incorporates books with his show. Dates & Times

A free gift for every new baby, our SmartStart bag has books for the little one and literacy resources for parents. Stop by the Children’s Room desk to pick one up.

Wee Care Kits
Developed in a partnership with local day care providers, these thematic kits include books, puzzles, puppets and activities. See the list of available themes here.
Early Literacy Resources
The Children’s Room has a large parenting collection that includes books about how and what to read to young children. Ask a Librarian if you need help finding anything. Check out our Raise A Reader page for tips and links to great online resources.
Foreign Language Resources
Does your child hear more than one language at home? Support your baby’s exposure to other languages by using our international collection, which includes DVDs, books, and audio materials in many languages.
You can also read a picture book in another language using the International Children’s Digital Library.
