Kid's Summer Reading

2008 Summer Schedule

How It Works
· Spend your summer laughing while you read and listen. Sign up starts Monday June 16th. You can count your book time all the way up to August 23rd. Sign up anytime at the Children’s Room desk or at Town Day on June 21st, 11am to 4 pm at the Birch Meadow Complex.

· Club members keep track of book time - reading and listening - on the grid that they take home. One box on the grid equals twenty minutes of book time and gets initialed by a parent or caregiver. When one row of seven boxes is completed, the club member may transfer the time to their registration chart on their next visit to the library. Readers and listeners work through their at their own rate through the summer and try to make their Laugh-O-Meter reach the "punch line", earning a funny shape and raffle ticket for the weekly drawing at the end of each row on their chart. Book and listening time will also benefit the Horizons for Homeless Children Playspace program! Thanks to the Friends of the Reading Public Library for their support.

. Book Buddies: Club members entering Grades 4 to 6 may read to a younger child. Both readers and buddies get credit for shared book time by initialing a block on their grid with a B.

· Be sure to pick up a flyer about the Writing Contest for children entering grades 2 to 6.

· Drop off a light colored T-shirt and have the RU Kidding logo silk-screened on it for free. Bring your shirt in by 9 pm on Monday, June 23rd and pick it up starting Friday, June 27th.

"Tickle My Funny Bone!"

The Reading Public Library invites you to use your imagination and write a very funny story!

Has anything ever made you laugh so hard that it “tickled your funny bone?” Tell a story that will make people roll on the floor laughing! What happened that started all the laughing? Where were you? Did something look different? Who else was with you? Did you expect to laugh so hard? What happened that started all the giggling? Remember that all good stories need a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Writers entering Grades 2-6 in the Fall, are invited to enter our annual writing contest. Write your story on your own and include illustrations if you'd like. Only one author per story, sorry.

The deadline for entries is Saturday July 19th at 5pm. Turn in your story at the Children's Room Desk. Don't forget to write your name, grade in the Fall and your phone number on the back of your entry!

All authors are invited to the Ice Cream Party on Wednesday, July 30th from 7:30 to 8:30 pm! You might like to volunteer to read your funny story out loud. All entries will be on display and the contest winners will be announced. Three prizes will be awarded at each grade level. Good luck!!!

Vehicle Day
Join us from 7:30 to 9:30 AM on Tuesday August 19th in the Reading Public Library Parking Lot to see BIG vehicles close up. Traditional participants include the Town of Reading Department of Public Works, Fire and Police Departments, Reading Municipal Light Department, and several private trucking companies who generously participate. Climb in the cab or just stand next to a truck and see how big it is!
