How to get a Library Card

Obtaining a library card is as easy as 1-2-3!

  1. Visit the Circulation Desk and present  identification and proof of residency;
  2. Pick a PIN in order to access your account online and reserve museum passes;
  3. Decide whether you would like a regular card or key-chain size card.

Acceptable forms of identification:
Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License with current address
Checkbook with current address, plus picture ID
Recent mail with current address, plus picture ID
School ID and identification with current address

That’s it! We’ll give you a library card right away!

Children

Children through sixth grade may apply for cards in the Children’s Room. If you aren’t a resident of Reading, we can probably put your hometown library card into our database.

Using your card at other libraries

Thanks to state standards for libraries you can use just about any public library in Massachusetts. Most libraries can input your Reading card into their computer system. If not, they can give you a card for their library if you present proper identification.

Non-residents

If you aren’t a resident of Reading, we accept library cards from all certified Massachusetts public libraries. If your home library has been decertified, please see our “Policy on Lending to Residents of Municipalities with Decertified Libraries”.
