Wintergirls (Laurie Halse Anderson)
“… body found in a motel room, alone …” This is what Lia keeps hearing over and over in her head. Cassie is dead. She died alone and it may be Lia’s fault. Lia and Cassie were best friends. They did everything together: sleepovers, ski trips, and even the game of starvation. They competed against each other for the thinnest body. Cassie was bulimic and Lia became anorexic. Now Cassie is dead, but Lia doesn’t have to become a wintergirl, “a ghost with a beating heart.” All she has too do is chase away the ghost of Cassie and start listening to what is true in her own heart.
No one has any time for Lia anymore. Her mother is too busy saving lives to even notice her own daughter is very close to loosing her own. Her father is constantly away on business and her step-mother is oblivious to this waif living right under her roof. May if Lia gets thin enough, she will simply disappear. Link to catalog
