Derby Square Tours’ Jim McAllister will recount some tales of the region’s most colorful characters–from the curious residents of Dogtown to the bizarre Lord Timothy Dexter–in this entertaining slide lecture. In honor of Valentine’s Day, he will also relate some fun local romance stories in keeping with the home-grown theme.

The Financial Planning Association (FPA) is the largest membership organization for personal financial planning experts in the U.S. and includes professionals from all backgrounds. Tonight’s presentation, by a member of this organization, will provide handouts to assist people in working through how to cope with a loss of income due to job loss or other adversity. The presenter will also tell how to manage investments during uncertain market conditions.

Join local residents Ron and Maureen D’Addario as they recount their 2011 mission trip to earthquake-ravaged Haiti with the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation. The mission of this foundation, a volunteer organization founded by parishioners of St. Boniface Church in Quincy, is to serve the poorest of the poor in rural Haiti with healthcare and humanitarian aid. The D’Addarios will show photos and narrate their experience among Haiti’s poor.

Ann is author of many books, essays and short stories, including Somewhere Off the Coast of Maine, and her newest book, The Red Thread. She has also written the powerful novel, The Knitting Circle, inspired by her own life, which is soon to be released as a feature film starring Katherine Heigl. Librarians Kathy Miksis and Nancy Aberman will be on hand to give their favorite picks for book group reading. Authors James Arsenault and Nancy Parsons will discuss James’ book, Brothers of War: the P.O.W. Experience. One of nine POWs to be marched to a German work camp in 1944, Arsenault has collected the memoirs of thirty-nine of the survivors among his brother prisoners. He will discuss his experience at Burzen Kommando 1637 in Poland as well as his writing and publishing. (Books will be available for purchase.)
