Come and meet some real live animals who have prehistoric relatives! Learn more about them through fossils and replicas of teeth and claws.
Our wildlife educator Mona will bring a number of animals including a Blue Uromastyn Lizard, Curly-feathered Chicken, Alligator, Egyptian Fruit Bat, Tortoise, Armadillo, Ball Python and Tarantula. See replicas of a T-Rex tooth, Giant Ground Sloth claw AND…don’t miss the real piece of fossilized Triceratops poop!

Do you know that owls live in Reading? Some are big, others small. Come learn about them and bundle up to go on an Owl Prowl to find one! Dave Williams, Reading bird enthusiast, will lead our Prowl and then we will return to the Mattera Cabin to cozy up for an owl story and hot cocoa.
This program is for children in Grade 2 and up with an adult. One adult for every 3 children. Registration required, space is limited – sign up begins on Friday January 27th. Register online or by calling the Children’s Room at 781-942-6705. Reading residents given preference.

Yesterday at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Conference in Dallas, TX, the youth media award winners were announced. Every year we look forward with anticipation to finding out what books will take home these high honors.

Step back in time as educator/entertainer David Downs acquaints us with the unique, fascinating and extraordinary medical techniques practiced during the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn how the monaural stethoscope was invented; observe the amazing electric Magneto Nervous Machine! Discover why the “ear cone” was placed in the ear and then set ablaze. The speaker is a member of The Living History Association. (This presentation is appropriate for all ages.)

Will you be shopping for children this holiday season? Are you a parent, grandparent, or teacher who is always on the look out for great books to share with kids? If so, you’ll leave our annual Best Books program with a wealth of titles to try.
Join the Children’s Librarians as we share our picks of 2011 which are suitable for borrowing or giving. We will talk about picture books, chapter books, graphic novels and nonfiction, and will give recommendations on the best audience for each book. Light refreshments will be served.
