Microsoft Office 2010 is now on our library computers! Take this workshop to learn some tips and tools to ease the transition from Microsoft Word 2003 to Microsoft Word 2010.

Do you want to learn how to play chess? Are you a bit rusty, and need a refresher? Or are you a seasoned player looking for playing partners? Whatever description fits you, this chess program is for you. We will have tables set up for players of all abilities, plus High School and Middle School volunteers ready to teach chess beginners of all ages. (Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.) Chess sets will be provided.

1st class: Thursday, January 26, 2012
7:15 – 8:45 p.m. (Various locations in the library)
- Review the naturalization process
- Teach about our representatives and congressmen at the state and federal level
- Help you fill out the necessary forms to become a citizen
- Work on English skills both oral and written
- Prepare you for the interview
- Prepare you for the U.S. history and government exam
This class is designed to instill confidence in a relaxed and welcoming environment. The session will run from February through April. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Conversation Circle is a group of people facilitated by a volunteer who meet on a weekly basis and practice their English speaking skills. The group provide the perfect opportunity for learners to improve their speaking confidence and meet other people who are learning English. Topics usually covered include;
* American culture and holidays, idioms
* Casual spoken English
* Daily life situations (the bank, the post office, speaking with neighbors, etc.)

Do you know that owls live in Reading? Some are big, others small. Come learn about them and bundle up to go on an Owl Prowl to find one! Dave Williams, Reading bird enthusiast, will lead our Prowl and then we will return to the Mattera Cabin to cozy up for an owl story and hot cocoa.
This program is for children in Grade 2 and up with an adult. One adult for every 3 children. Registration required, space is limited – sign up begins on Friday January 27th. Register online or by calling the Children’s Room at 781-942-6705. Reading residents given preference.

Derby Square Tours’ Jim McAllister will recount some tales of the region’s most colorful characters–from the curious residents of Dogtown to the bizarre Lord Timothy Dexter–in this entertaining slide lecture. In honor of Valentine’s Day, he will also relate some fun local romance stories in keeping with the home-grown theme.
