Slacker Titles

May 2018 Slacker Title: On Turpentine Lane by Elinor Lipman

Faith Frankel has returned to her suburban hometown, where she writes institutional thank-you notes for her alma mater. It’s a peaceful life and with her recent purchase of a sweet bungalow on Turpentine Lane her life is finally on track. When she finds some mysterious artifacts in the attic of her new home, she wonders whether anything in her life is as it seems. Elinor Lipman may well have invented the screwball romantic comedy for our era.  On Turpentine Lane is funny, poignant, and a little bit outrageous.

April 2018 Slacker Title: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

Trevor Noah’s path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother, at the time such a union was punishable by five years in prison. As he struggles to find his place in society, his mother is determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. In his memoir, Noah weaves together a moving yet funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time.  Tip: This is a must read and an even better listen.  Read with wit and candor by the author.

March 2018 Slacker Title: Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

On a foggy summer night, eleven people depart Martha’s Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the crash and the backstories of the passengers and crew members, the mystery surrounding the tragedy heightens. Was it chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work?  Enjoy the unraveling!
