Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi
Recommended for: Grades 5-7

2003 Newbery Award Winner
“Fatherless” peasant boy “Asta’s Son” is threatened by the steward of the manor when his mother dies. He flees, but not before the village priest secretly gives him his mother’s cross and reveals the boy’s real name and some intriguing details of his birth. During his escape, Crispin meets a juggler/ex-priest, who teaches him to think for himself and question those in power. The story is suspenseful and thought-provoking (with a small amount of graphic medieval violence).
