Book Mates for Kids

book mates pictureWhat is Book Mates?

Book Mates is a reading buddy program partnering 1st through 4th grade children with a teen volunteer.  The goal of the program is to give children the opportunity to practice the skill of reading with an attentive teen and have fun at the same time! Teens in 6-12 grades interested in volunteering should visit our Book Mates Volunteer Program site.

When do you offer Book Mates?

Currently, we offer Book Mates in the Fall and Spring of each school year. The program runs with weekly 30 minute sessions on Wednesdays at 3:30-4:00 p.m. Spaces are limited and weekly attendance is required.

Each time a session is offered, we accept new applications online (see below). Submitting an application does not mean automatic acceptance. Applicants will be notified by phone or email of status. Check back here throughout the year to learn if we are currently accepting applications (see below).

What does a typical Book Mates session include?

  • A parent/caregiver brings their registered child to the library at the designed time with a book(s) to read. Please ensure your child has books selected prior to each session start (you can arrive early to pick out books if necessary). While your child is attending this program, a parent/caregiver must remain in the library.
  • A trained teen volunteer will greet your child and together find a place in the library to sit and read. Teen volunteers are not tutors or reading specialists, but available to offer a fun experience while practicing reading with your child.
  • Each session lasts 30 minutes with some time devoted to comprehension and review.
  • Children may select a sticker at the completion of each session.

Please contact the Children’s Room (781-942-6705) or Teen Services (781-942-6703) with any questions about the program or application process.

The Book Mates application is currently closed and will reopen Fall 2019. Check back here for updates.
